Dettori aims for fifth Arc on Enable

 Sep 28 2017

John Gosden’s Enable has swept all before her this season in a brilliant campaign which has seen her complete an Oaks double as well as big race wins in the King George and Yorkshire Oaks.

Soft ground is a distinct possibility on Sunday but that, unlike with some of her key rivals, will not daunt connections as she’s already won two of her Group 1’s in testing conditions.

Enable is the only horse to prevent an Aidan O’Brien clean sweep of the Classics in Britain and Ireland and the brilliant Irish trainer has chosen to run five; Order Of St George, Winter, Capri, Idaho and Seventh Heaven.

Highland Reel and Order Of St George filled the places behind Found last year in what was a remarkable trifecta for the stable. The conditions have ruled out Highland Reel, however Order Of St George is a different proposition as Europe’s leading stayer who handles all ground.

Since being narrowly denied by Big Orange in the Gold Cup at Royal Ascot, the five-year-old has dropped back in trip to win over 2800 metres in dominant fashion in the Group 3 Irish St Leger Trial and the Group 1 Irish St Leger.

He’s a remarkable horse who has the turn of foot to win at 2400 metres and while he was running on late in last year’s race, this extra emphasis on stamina will suit and the decision to once again swerve the Melbourne Cup could prove a wise one.

Elsewhere Ulysses will bid to give Sir Michael Stoute a second Arc and is an obvious danger. He has a high cruising speed and just got the better of Barney Roy in the Eclipse before finding Enable too good in the King George. He was back to winning ways in the Group 1 Juddmonte International Stakes and while that showed he can handle cut, he certainly wouldn’t want it too soft back over a trip which really stretches his stamina.

The Prix de l’Arc de Triomphe is live on Sky Throughbred Central on Sunday night.
